WDM Transceiver Form Factor – SFP, SFP+ or QSFP28?
August 25 , 2022You need to consider the physical interface of the switch or network device you are using.
Multiple industry standards ensure network equipment compatibility and a range is available including SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP28 or XFP. Examples of data transfer rates and ranges for CWDM and DWDM in different available form factors are given below. Note that both XFP and SFP+ can transmit signals up to 10 Gbit, but XFP has a larger footprint than SFP+ transceivers and they are not interchangeable.
Form-Factor Types | Data Rate | CWDM Range | DWDM Range |
SFP | 100M, 1G, 4G | 40 – 160km | 40 – 80km |
SFP+ | 8G, 10G, 16G | 10 – 80km | 20 – 100km |
XFP | 10G | 40 – 80km | 40 – 80km |
SFP28 | 25 G | 10 – 40km | 10km |
QSFP28 | 100 G | 10km | – |
SFPs are designed to support 100/1000Mbps Ethernet, Fibre Channel and SONET/SDH, and support transmission speeds up to 4.25Gbps, common SFP ports on Ethernet switches and routers, network cards and firewalls. SFP+ is almost identical to SFP but supports faster speeds up to 10Gbps over longer distances.
QSFP (Quad Small Form Factor) also supports Ethernet, Fibre Channel and SONET and InfiniBand and can transmit at different data rates, QSFP28 is one of the latest versions to support 100 Gbps applications. QSFP can support 4x 25Gbps lanes, 2x 50Gpbs or 1x 100Gbps depending on the transceiver.
