1. Principle of the Raman amplifier:  

When intense light is injected into a nonlinear optical medium, the high-energy pump light scatters and transfers a small portion of the incident power to another beam with a frequency shift determined by the vibration mode of the medium. This process is known as the Raman effect. Quantum mechanics describes how one photon from an incident light wave is scattered by one molecule to become another low-frequency photon while completing the transition between vibrational dynamics. The incident photons are referred to as pumping light, and the low-frequency frequency-shift photons are called Stokes waves.

 

2. Characteristics of the Raman amplifier:

(1) The equivalent noise figure is low and negative;

(2) The combined use of both Raman and conventional EDFA can significantly reduce system noise figure and increase transmission span;

(3) Gain exists on any type of fiber, with gain wavelength determined by pump wavelength;

(4) Can suppress nonlinear effects;

(5) Gain remains flat (~1dB) within a broad range (30nm);

(6) Selecting more pump wavelengths can expand bandwidth and gain flatness.

 

3. Application of the Raman amplifier:
